About us

DecodeThatVIN is a free VIN decoder and car catalog. It tells you what a vehicle is from its 17-character VIN and helps you check what happened to it before you buy.

What we do

  • Free VIN decoding. North American VINs are decoded in your browser with the public NHTSA vPIC service (make, model, trim, engine, plant, safety equipment). For European VINs we show the make and country, and the likely model and engine from our own rules, built from VINs decoded before with the same pattern.
  • A car catalog. 64 brands with 1,965 generation pages and 2,803 engine spec sheets (horsepower, torque, fuel economy, dimensions), in US units with the metric figures alongside.
  • Vehicle history. For accidents, title brands and odometer readings we send you to carVertical, a vehicle history provider. We link the free official checks as well: NHTSA recalls, NICB VINCheck (theft and total loss) and NMVTIS.

How we earn money

Links to carVertical are affiliate links: if you buy a report, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. The free decoder and the catalog stay free.
