Where to find the VIN on a Chevrolet

On a Chevrolet the VIN plate sits at the lower left of the windshield and on the driver-side door jamb; the same 17 characters are printed on the title, the registration card and the insurance card. If any of them differ, stop and check the vehicle history.

Chevrolet

How to recognize a Chevrolet VIN

Chevrolet is a brand from the United States. The first three characters of the VIN (the WMI code) identify the maker and, often, the plant or the market the vehicle was built for.

1G1Chevrolet cars, USA
1GCChevrolet trucks, USA
1GNChevrolet SUVs, USA
2G1Chevrolet, Canada
3GNChevrolet, Mexico
KL1Chevrolet built in South Korea (Spark, Trax, Trailblazer)

Example: a VIN that starts with 1G1 stands for Chevrolet cars, USA. The 10th character is the model year; the last six characters are the production number. A VIN that starts with another code is not necessarily a problem (makers change codes over time), but it is worth checking the history before you buy.

Chevrolet plants in North America

A VIN that starts with 1, 4 or 5 was assigned in the United States, 2 in Canada and 3 in Mexico. Chevrolet builds or built vehicles for the US market here:

  • Bowling Green, Kentucky (Corvette)
  • Fort Wayne, Indiana (Silverado)
  • Arlington, Texas (Tahoe, Suburban)
  • Ramos Arizpe, Mexico (Equinox, Blazer)

What each part of a Chevrolet VIN means

Positions 1–3 · WMIManufacturer

For Chevrolet: 1G1, 1GC, 1GN, 2G1, 3GN, KL1. The first character is the region (United States or the country of the plant).

Positions 4–8 · VDSModel and engine

Chevrolet codes the model line, body style and engine here, which is why the VIN shows which version of the Chevrolet Captiva you are looking at.

Position 9Check digit

Every Chevrolet sold in the US carries a valid check digit; our decoder flags a VIN whose check digit does not compute.

Positions 10–17Year, plant and serial

Model year, plant code and the unique production number of the Chevrolet, which history reports use to link accidents, title brands and odometer readings.

FAQ

Chevrolet VIN questions

VIN year chart

What does a Chevrolet VIN start with?

Usually one of these codes: 1G1 – Chevrolet cars, USA; 1GC – Chevrolet trucks, USA; 1GN – Chevrolet SUVs, USA; 2G1 – Chevrolet, Canada; 3GN – Chevrolet, Mexico. The first three characters are the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI); a maker can have several, one per plant, vehicle type or market.

Where are Chevrolet vehicles for the US built?

In North America, Chevrolet builds or built at Bowling Green, Kentucky (Corvette); Fort Wayne, Indiana (Silverado); Arlington, Texas (Tahoe, Suburban); Ramos Arizpe, Mexico (Equinox, Blazer). Their VINs start with 1G1, 1GC, 1GN, 2G1 and 3GN. Imported Chevrolet vehicles keep the code of their home plant.

Does the VIN show the model year of a Chevrolet?

Yes: on Chevrolet VINs the 10th character is the model year (see the VIN year chart). The letter repeats every 30 years, so check it against the production years of the model.

Can I see the history of a Chevrolet from its VIN?

The free decode shows what the car is. Accidents, title brands and odometer readings are in the Chevrolet history report; recalls are checked on the Chevrolet VIN check page.
