Where to find the VIN on a Toyota

On a Toyota the VIN plate sits at the lower left of the windshield and on the driver-side door jamb; the same 17 characters are printed on the title, the registration card and the insurance card. If any of them differ, stop and check the vehicle history.

Toyota

How to recognize a Toyota VIN

Toyota is a brand from Japan. The first three characters of the VIN (the WMI code) identify the maker and, often, the plant or the market the vehicle was built for.

JTDToyota cars, Japan
JTEToyota SUVs, Japan
4T1Toyota cars, Georgetown, Kentucky
5TDToyota SUVs and minivans, USA
5TFToyota trucks, San Antonio, Texas
2T3Toyota RAV4, Woodstock, Ontario
SB1Toyota, Burnaston (UK)
VNKToyota, Valenciennes (France)

Example: a VIN that starts with JTD stands for Toyota cars, Japan. The 10th character is the model year; the last six characters are the production number. A VIN that starts with another code is not necessarily a problem (makers change codes over time), but it is worth checking the history before you buy.

Toyota plants in North America

A VIN that starts with 1, 4 or 5 was assigned in the United States, 2 in Canada and 3 in Mexico. Toyota builds or built vehicles for the US market here:

  • Georgetown, Kentucky (Camry, RAV4)
  • Princeton, Indiana (Highlander, Grand Highlander, Sequoia, Sienna)
  • San Antonio, Texas (Tundra, Sequoia)
  • Blue Springs, Mississippi (Corolla)
  • Woodstock and Cambridge, Ontario (RAV4)
  • Guanajuato and Tijuana, Mexico (Tacoma)

What each part of a Toyota VIN means

Positions 1–3 · WMIManufacturer

For Toyota: JTD, JTE, 4T1, 5TD, 5TF, 2T3, SB1, VNK. The first character is the region (Japan or the country of the plant).

Positions 4–8 · VDSModel and engine

Toyota codes the model line, body style and engine here, which is why the VIN shows which version of the Toyota Hilux you are looking at.

Position 9Check digit

Every Toyota sold in the US carries a valid check digit; our decoder flags a VIN whose check digit does not compute.

Positions 10–17Year, plant and serial

Model year, plant code and the unique production number of the Toyota, which history reports use to link accidents, title brands and odometer readings.

FAQ

Toyota VIN questions

VIN year chart

What does a Toyota VIN start with?

Usually one of these codes: JTD – Toyota cars, Japan; JTE – Toyota SUVs, Japan; 4T1 – Toyota cars, Georgetown, Kentucky; 5TD – Toyota SUVs and minivans, USA; 5TF – Toyota trucks, San Antonio, Texas. The first three characters are the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI); a maker can have several, one per plant, vehicle type or market.

Where are Toyota vehicles for the US built?

In North America, Toyota builds or built at Georgetown, Kentucky (Camry, RAV4); Princeton, Indiana (Highlander, Grand Highlander, Sequoia, Sienna); San Antonio, Texas (Tundra, Sequoia); Blue Springs, Mississippi (Corolla); Woodstock and Cambridge, Ontario (RAV4); Guanajuato and Tijuana, Mexico (Tacoma). Their VINs start with 4T1, 5TD, 5TF and 2T3. Imported Toyota vehicles keep the code of their home plant.

Does the VIN show the model year of a Toyota?

Yes: on Toyota VINs the 10th character is the model year (see the VIN year chart). The letter repeats every 30 years, so check it against the production years of the model.

Can I see the history of a Toyota from its VIN?

The free decode shows what the car is. Accidents, title brands and odometer readings are in the Toyota history report; recalls are checked on the Toyota VIN check page.
