Truck VIN check and lookup
Buying a used truck? Search its VIN for title brands, accidents and mileage before you pay.
Title and weight class
Commercial trucks change hands often; check the title brands and that the VIN on the title matches the frame.
Hours and mileage
Fleet trucks pile up miles fast. Compare the odometer with service and inspection readings.
Fleet and accident use
Rental, fleet or salvage use and recorded accidents show up in the history.
Truck VINs: what is different
GVWR in the VIN
For trucks, buses and multipurpose vehicles, the VDS (characters 4–8) must encode the gross vehicle weight rating class, so the VIN tells a half-ton pickup from a heavy-duty one.
Model year
The 10th character is the model year. The 7th-character rule that separates 1990 from 2020 applies only up to 10,000 lb GVWR; for heavier trucks the age of the truck settles it.
Where the VIN is
On the dashboard and the driver-side door jamb, and stamped on the frame rail, usually on the driver side near the front wheel.
