Where the VIN is
In the United Kingdom the VIN is printed on the V5C logbook, field E. On the car it is at the bottom of the windshield and on the door pillar; all copies must match.
MOT mileage
Every MOT test since 2005 records the mileage, and the free GOV.UK MOT history shows each reading: a drop between two tests is easy to spot.
Outstanding finance
Many UK cars are bought on PCP or hire purchase, and the finance company owns the car until the loan is paid. Run a finance check before you pay.
Used cars and vehicle records in the United Kingdom
Insurers class written-off cars as Category A or B (scrap, never back on the road), S (structural damage, repairable) or N (non-structural damage); before October 2017 the repairable classes were C and D. A repaired Cat S or Cat N car can be sold legally, but the category stays on its record.
